While I was home visiting, I decided that I wanted to do this 5k. I've done this particular 5k so many times, and even though it's kind of a tough course, it's one of my favorites. My dad wasn't sure that he wanted to do it, but I think he was glad he did. It's one of his favorites too, because it's the race that all the high school cross country teams show up for, since it's after the start of practice but before the start of competition. He says it reminds him of when I was in h.s. aaawww.... Anyway, I knew I would see one of the coaches from my high school there with the boys cross country team. He was a 1st year teacher my senior year, so we were buddies. I like to joke that I took him under my wing and showed him the ropes. My only goal was to enjoy the run... I hadn't been running very much and hadn't done any race since January...wait, that's not true... I did one in April on base here. I should find my time and add that race too! Anyway, I felt pretty good running the 5k, but I wasn't incredibly pleased with my time. Neither was my old coach, haha! Nevertheless, my dad and I decided to stick around for the awards. They called out the 3rd place female in my age group and it wasn't me, so I kind of looked at my dad and shrugged "oh well". Then they called out the 2nd place and it WAS me! I was a little bit shocked!! This is one of my favorite races because the "medal" is a wooden shoe! I now have a matching pair! |
